Mixotica hot event at the Red Monkey

Friday, April 26, 2002 - Mixotica is the most interesting new musical event to enter LoDo in recent months. Every Sunday night, the Red Monkey Lounge above B-52 Billiards welcomes various DJs and performance artists who bring lounge music to life with weekly theme shows.

The event is co-hosted by the lead hip-swiveler of the Burlesque As It Was troupe, Vivian Va-Voom, and DJ Deluxe. Each week they invite their friends and cohorts to bring their record collections and bodily talents to the Red Monkey for a night of exotica, modern cocktail music and dance.

Last weekend's theme, "France vs. Germany," pitted musical selections from each country against each other, via the hands of Radio 1190 DJs Matt Beck and Alisha. The go-go gals from the Burlesque troop added to the contest with a display of French Burlesque dancers taking on German Cabaret entertainers.

Previous themes range from the "Oh! Oscar" night, where they laid down a red carpet and invited guests to come as their favorite historical Oscar winner, to the peculiar combination of Tikiland-meets-Ireland for their "Irish Eyes in the Jungle" party in March.

This weekend, the plan is to blend in Eastern influences by bringing in a guest DJ who specializes in Japanese pop music. Leave it to Miss Vivian to find an extraordinary and bizarre way to combine the sensual arts of Geisha girls with J-pop, hula hoops and tropical drinks. Crowds can be random mixes of your average LoDo Joes with hipsters from the Capitol Hill and South Broadway neighborhoods.

Mixotica at Red Monkey, 1920 Market St., upstairs at B-52 Billiards; Sunday nights, 9 p.m.; no cover (303-383-1941).
